Sand and sustainability in the marine sector

Gain insight into the marine aggregates industry response to the launch of the 2022 report published by the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP), highlighting the current state of sand and sustainability within the marine sector. This webinar is supported by the European Marine Sand and Gravel Group (EMSAGG).

Background
With sand being a crucial part of our marine ecosystems and infrastructure development, it has a major influence on not only the livelihood of our communities, but also biodiversity. It is no secret that the mismanagement of sand as a resource can lead to catastrophic impacts across many sectors, through excessive dredging, extraction and transferring of marine sands. Unfortunately, across many parts of the world this remains ungoverned and poorly regulated.

In 2022, UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) published ‘Sand and sustainability: 10 Strategic Recommendations to Avert a Crisis’. This investigated the environmental and social consequences that have been largely overlooked by industry and proposes various solutions to the crisis we find ourselves in today.

This webinar dove deeper into the response from industry since the release of this report. Hear from a key member of the UNEP team that produced the document, along with other members of the European marine aggregate industry who will share their story of national response to the report. This webinar discussed the different perspectives of this report from across Europe and includes a live Q&A session with the expert panel.

For the past 25 years, EMSAGG has worked to identify developments and information needs for the marine sand and gravel constituents concerning all aspects of the industry across Europe.
