Non-flood defence structures - new CIRIA guidance

This webinar launched CIRIA’s new guidance on Integration of non-flood defence structures into the flood defence system (C804F) and heard first-hand from the authors.

Many structures whose primary purpose is not flood defence are relied upon to fulfil a flood and coastal defence function. Following the introduction of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 (the 2010 Act) there is specific provision for designating these structures as flood risk management assets and providing statutory protection against works which may compromise their flood risk functions. However, despite the guidance and provision to designate non-flood defence structures, evidence to date suggests that the application of legal designation has been relatively limited.

This research study set out to gain a greater understanding of the use and implications of the designation process with an aim to identify the actions and resources required to overcome potential challenges associated with designation.

This webinar heard first-hand from the project team and authors about the scope of the work, the consultation process and key findings, as well as practical case studies.
