CIRIA Biodiversity Challenge and Awards 2023 launch

This webinar launched CIRIA’s BIG Biodiversity Challenge and Awards 2023, and explored some of the award-winning projects from 2022 that delivered the best examples of biodiversity enhancements in construction and the wider built environment.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the BIG Biodiversity Challenge created in 2013 to celebrate the contribution of the construction industry to biodiversity. The challenge invited the sector to ‘Do One Thing’ and add at least one new biodiversity enhancement – big or small – to a building site, development, or existing structure.

Our thinking about biodiversity in the built environment has evolved since the creation of the Challenge and increasing acceptance of Biodiversity Net Gain principles has led to their forthcoming mandatory implementation. In light of this evolution, we wish to refocus the Challenge from “Doing One Thing” to celebrating the many benefits of biodiversity in the built environment- or "Going Big for Biodiversity.”

We challenge you to Go Big for Biodiversity by submitting an entry form today (closing date is 12 May 2023)!  Should you accept this challenge, you will be entered into the competition for one of our highly regarded awards, to be announced in September. Winning entries will show how biodiverse habitats can be designed and delivered within the built environment.

CIRIA Biodiversity Community of Practice
The Biodiversity Challenge and Awards are led by CIRIA Biodiversity Community of Practice (CoP) which focuses on growing support for the implementation of Biodiversity Net Gain principles within our industry. CIRIA Biodiversity CoP fosters collaboration and knowledge transfer to assist the management of biodiversity across the transport, utilities, housing and development sectors. This network of academia, private and public entities provides thought leadership and key guidance resources for the built environment.
