Marine markets, pricing and environmental restrictions

This webinar focused on gaining insight into the recent development of environmental restrictions to the marine aggregates industry, and hear about our updated guidance 'C818' published last year alongside the International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC).

Marine aggregates such as sand and gravel are widely used in the construction industry. Rising populations and rapid urbanisation have increased global demand for sand, and mining of this highly-sought-after resource has more than trebled in the last two decades to more than 50 billion metric tons per year according to the UN.

Environmental restrictions and sustainable dredging practices are paramount to curtail the disruption of ecosystems, water quality deterioration, and harm to biodiversity when extracting sand and gravel.

The dredging industry’s work vessels play a crucial role in addressing societal challenges related to water safety, climate adaptation, climate mitigation and energy transition.

“Offshore vessels” must meet the requirements of the European Emission Trading System (EU ETS) following its expansion to include maritime transport. These vessels must report their carbon emissions under the terms of the European Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (EU MRV) Maritime Regulation from 2025.

The dredging industry has identified challenges posed by these more stringent regulations which could lead to possible market distortions if applied to work vessels. Attendees will gain insight into how the influence of stricter environmental restrictions will impact marine markets and pricing.

The webinar will also include a deep dive into our updated guidance Cost standards for dredging equipment 2024 (C818) which was published last year alongside the International Association for Dredging Companies (IADC). The publication is a valuable resource for all stakeholders involved in dredging projects and provides a standardised approach for assessing the 2024 replacement capital and associated costs associated with a range of dredging equipment and auxiliary machinery commonly used in such projects.
