The Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP)

Join this CIRIA / BOS webinar to discover innovative engineering feats and the benefits of modern methods of construction at the world’s most extreme construction site as the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) modernises our Antarctic infrastructure for future generations of polar scientists.

Background
BAS is replacing old buildings in Antarctica that have reached the end of their life with modern and energy-efficient infrastructure. The Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme was commissioned by UK Research Innovation (UKRI) and National Environment Research Council (NERC). The £670m programme which launched in 2017 will see a number of projects carried out in Antarctica to support climate change global research scientists, and the search for bio-renewable energy.

AIMP projects which are in progress include:
  • Discovery Building (2019-2025)
  • Rothera Renewable Energy
  • Hangar Redevelopment
  • Signy Research Station Redevelopment (commencing 2024)
Last season, a significant milestone was reached in relation to the commissioning and take over of the Discovery Building - the new science and operations facility at Rothera Research Station - enabling it to come into use over the austral winter and in preparation for the austral summer season. This facility will transform the way in which the station operates as well as contributing towards reducing its carbon emissions.

Attendees will hear first-hand from the project partners about how they operate safely and sustainably using digital construction to help deliver work and overcome potential risks from adverse weather, icebergs, and natural wildlife.

Dr David Hancock talks about the construction of the Discovery Building – a new, purpose-built scientific support and operations facility which is due to be completed in 2025 at Rothera Research Station as part of the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP).

Why attend
  • Hear how the AIMP is delivering projects that strike a balance between safe, usable facilities in one of the world’s harshest environments while operating at net-zero carbon emissions.
  • Learn how the project partners carefully plan the AIMP projects to minimise operational and other risks, and to complete the works in the limited six-month ‘construction season’ each year.
  • Understand the vital role Information Management plays in collecting accurate and structured project information data to the right people at the right time to enable confident decision making by the key stakeholders.
  • Gain insight into the logistics to deliver people, supplies and containers of cargo needed for modernising Rothera Research Station.
  • Earn valuable CPD
