Background
Blue-green infrastructure helps communities to mitigate and adapt to climate challenges including through reducing flooding, managing surface water, improving air quality as well as providing green space for recreation and wildlife.
To efficiently manage blue-green infrastructure, it is important that it is recognised as an asset. The location, cost, required maintenance, risks and potential consequences of failure, functional life expectancy and means of disposal or renewal should be understood by all involved. It is also important that benefits created by blue-green infrastructure are understood so that these projects can be assessed and prioritised for investment alongside more traditional infrastructure projects.
Adopting a collaborative approach to the asset management of blue-green infrastructure drives innovation, efficient processes, increased success, and improved communication. Collaboration is most effective when right stakeholders are engaged from the outset, from the architects to the local authorities, to the developers and sub-contractors, by combining their expertise to ensure good design, construction and maintenance.
A practical case study from Bradford Metropolitan District Council and GreenBlue Urban will demonstrate their collaborative approach at North Street, Keighley, West Yorkshire. This project illustrates how imaginative tree planting can provide numerous benefits and will continue to provide these benefits for decades. Bradford MDC will also outline their plans in working toward the climate emergency and share their future ambitions that will certainly be of benefit to all.
