Local authorities in the UK have had a statutory duty to investigate contaminated land in their regions, seeking its remediation where necessary since April 2000. As a result, the contaminated land industry has generated a series of sub-specialisms from risk assessment to remedial technologies and sampling to sustainable development.

Local authorities are the primary regulator for contaminated land in England and commonly employ a Contaminated Land Officer (CLO) who must understand all these specialisms. This webinar is aimed at those officers in local government who may have recently been appointed as CLO whether having moved from another specialism within local government or having joined the public sector from other parts of the industry.

The webinar will explain the duties of CLOs including areas where they have lead responsibility, support other Council teams or give advice to members of the public. Expert speakers will discuss the CLO’s regulatory role, how they provide advice and the maintenance of registers, detailed records and archives on contaminated land matters. They will also show how CLOs, who are often the only technical specialist in their respective organisations, can develop their own knowledge and understanding.
