The future of construction - inspiring the next generation

CIRIA is partnering with Green Sky Thinking Week and CIC 2050 Group to focus on how the next generation of engineers, architects, and designers can influence and effect change today.

Ticket information

This event is free to attend.

When?
Tuesday, 29 April 2014 from 18:00 PM - 20:30 PM (registration from 17:30)

Background
The joint Government and industry "Industrial Strategy for Construction" (2013) provides a vision for the construction industry in 2025:
•    33% lower construction and whole life costs
•    50% faster delivery from inception to delivery
•    50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
•    50% reduction of trade gaps between total exports and imports for construction materials

The challenges in achieving these targets become even more pronounced when future scenarios of climate change, population increase and infrastructure service demand through to 2050 are considered.

Objectives
This event, in collaboration with the CIC 2050 Group*, will explore these challenges and focus on how the next generation of engineers, architects, and designers can influence and effect change today. Tim Broyd, UCL Chair & ICE Vice-President, will outline the current and forecasted challenges facing the construction industry.

Louise Clarke, Chair of the CIC 2050 Group will provide an update on the recent survey the CIC 2050 Group completed on ‘Creating a great industry we can be proud to work in’. The event will then include a panel session with members from the CIC 2050 Group who discuss and address how the next generation can influence and find solutions.

The discussion points from this event will contribute to a report to circulate among senior industry figures and the main industry bodies and guide the Group in its strategic planning for future activities.

We are encouraging CIRIA members to nominate an early career or graduate level representative to attend this event with them, to develop a platform for inter-generational knowledge exchange and discussion.

This event is being held as part of Green Sky Thinking Week, offering young construction industry professionals the opportunity to exchange knowledge, gain practical insights and develop business relationships.
*The CIC 2050 Group, supported by the Construction Industry Council, comprises dynamic industry young professionals, who represent a wide range of disciplines across the built environment.

Who should attend?
Places are limited and priority will be given to CIRIA Core, Associate and Network members. Due to the topic of the event, nominated member representatives are encouraged to invite one or more early career or graduate-level colleagues to attend with them.
