3 DP World London Gateway is situated in Essex on the north bank of the River Thames. This location provides shipping access for the world’s leading companies to the centre of the UK’s busiest markets. Supplied with the most up-to-date equipment London Gateway port will be the most efficient in the country. Alongside the port will be Europe’s largest logistics park with individual units in excess of one million square feet. The concept of port centric logistics reduces the distance that trade has to travel, cutting time, costs and vehicle emissions, and making the whole process more efficient and sustainable. Infrastructure investment Improvements have been made to the surrounding infrastructure network in order to maximise the efficiency of the new development. Junction improvement works have occurred on the A13 and the M25. The Thameshaven branch line, linking London Gateway to the main rail network, has been increased to a twin track and also relocated so as to reduce the impact on local residents. A new access road has been built so that port and park traffic will avoid the local roads. To ensure that the largest ships in the world will be able to visit London Gateway, now and in the future, it was necessary to dredge a deeper channel in the Thames. The channel was increased to -17.5 m deep and 300 m wide, it was extended 100 km out to the Sunk. The dredge material was then used to reclaim a part of the Thames to increase the area of the port by 94 ha. In total, 18 million m3 of sand was used to create 'new Essex'. In fact, drivers can be confused when looking at their satnav while on the quay as it indicates they should be swimming in the Thames! The reclamation is protected by a new quay wall. The quay wall consists of two concrete walls, 42 m deep, joined together by 1,250 steel tie rods. The wall is designed to provide protection against a tidal flood event with a 1 in 1000 probability of occurring. Some parts of the old sea wall have been demolished, where the old sea wall is retained and filling has been placed behind it the load on the wall has been relieved by installing recycled tyre bales.
