Sustainability Are we entering the age ofecological engineering? Louise Clarke, CIRIA, discusses if engineering is entering a new phase where there is greater focus on natural processes in the way that places are designed and built “The state of our environment, combined with a dwindling of non-renewable resources available to solve environmental problems, suggests that the time has come for yet a new paradigm in engineering that involves ecosystem and landscape scale questions and solutions” (Mitsch and Jorgensen, 2003). There is no doubt that there is increasing understanding within industry and society that the environment is a substantial valuable resource that should be valued and incorporated into the design of towns and cities. Further to this is the need to consider the resources that are used and the ecological footprint of towns and cities. Future pressures of demographic and climate change are set to put increased strain on resources and the natural environment. So is this an 16
