14 CIRIA’s Biodiversity Interest Group (BIG) is delighted to announce that the 2015 BIG Biodiversity Challenge is now open for entries, with leaders from across construction, infrastructure, transport, retail and government challenging the industry to unleash its wild side and ‘do one thing’ for biodiversity. Led by BIG and supported by over 60 organisations from a variety of backgrounds, the BIG Biodiversity Challenge is to find a space in your development, site or building, however big or small, permanent or temporary, and be creative about what you can do for biodiversity. To help organisations do that, the BIG Biodiversity Challenge offers advice, support and learning to show how biodiversity enhancements can be simple, affordable and achievable. Joining industry leaders in biodiversity to share best practice, generate ideas, and highlight the positive contribution your organisation is making couldn’t be easier – all you need to do is sign up at www.bigchallenge.info. With 119 entries ranging from bug hotels, log piles and bird boxes, to restoring riverbanks and running wildlife workshops for schools, last year’s BIG Biodiversity Challenge Awards demonstrated that doing just one thing can make a BIG difference to the decline of biodiversity in the UK. Partners CIRIA are delighted that Kier, Marks & Spencer and Murphy will once again be partnering the BIG Biodiversity Challenge in 2015. Along with the three existing partners from 2014 a further four organisations have pledged support and become partners in 2015 – ABG Ltd, Costain, Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerWessels UK. Some of our new partners have outlined the importance their organisation places on biodiversity and what motivated them to become a partner of the BIG Biodiversity Challenge 2015: ABG Ltd “Signing up as a partner of the Big Biodiversity Challenge demonstrates our commitment to creating a better environment through promoting biodiversity. We already have a green roof creating biodiversity within our own factory and have recently installed a vegetated retaining wall alongside a stream within our site. These installations demonstrate our ongoing commitment to improving biodiversity, as well as serving as a showcase features to demonstrate to our clients the positive impact of increasing biodiversity as part of their development”. Martin Lambley, ABG Ltd Costain “Costain, the engineering solutions provider, delivers integrated consulting, project delivery and operations and maintenance services to major blue-chip customers in targeted market sectors. Our environment has never been so important or valued so highly by society and by becoming a partner of the Big Biodiversity Challenge we hope to further engage and challenge our people and the wider industry to take an even more active role in enhancing the environment to leave a positive legacy”.
