Update to C759 Livestock Manure and Silage Storage for Agriculture (P3300)

The CIRIA guide Livestock manure and silage storage infrastructure for agriculture (C759F) is a 2 part guidance document produced by CIRIA in 2015. This guidance has helped to underpin regulatory position and provide good practice methods accessible to designers, contractors and agricultural operators since launch.

Since 2015, significant regulatory changes have been introduced across the UK, including the Farming Rules for Water (2018) in England, the Water Environment Regulations (2021) in Scotland, and the Water Resources Regulations (2021) in Wales. Growing public concern over water quality and pollution, alongside new funding initiatives such as Defra’s Slurry Infrastructure Grants, has increased focus on resilient, sustainable storage. At the same time, advances in technology, lessons learned from Anaerobic Digestion, and insights from related guidance (such as the update to CIRIA C736) highlight the need to modernise and consolidate the existing C759 guidance.

Since 2015 there has also been significant experience gathered in the use of the guidance, experience in regulation and a range of technologies, products and approaches to agricultural storage. The growth of energy from waste through Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facilities also needs to be factored. There are lessons to be learnt from complementary guidance in other sectors , for example the ongoing update to Ciria C736 Containment Systems for Pollution Control.

This guide will replace both parts of the C759 guidance document, combining its coverage of slurry storage selection, design, and construction into a single publication, while also updating the legislative and regulatory context for the UK.
