Odour nuisance in brownfield redevelopment: A call for action

Odour nuisance issues associated with construction sites (brownfield) and waste management facilities have been subject to significant media attention over recent years.  This can be a highly emotive issue with respect to local communities and stakeholder groups, but is often far more complex within the regime of contaminated land and brownfield redevelopment.

These issues often arise due to legacy contamination based on the Sites history, in particular Sites with Hydrocarbons, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) and other potentially hazardous gases in the ground that are disturbed during active works. CIRIA plans to develop good practice guidance to assist contaminated land, waste management and construction professionals involved in the regeneration of brownfield sites, where there is a potential for off-site odour migration.

CIRIA is currently seeking technical and financial support to develop A good practice for odour management on contaminated sites.
