Floating Wind Innovation Centre opens in Aberdeen

The FLOWIC (Floating Wind Innovation Centre), led by the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, is a state-of-the-art facility with a budget of £9 million, dedicated to addressing the specific challenges of floating wind technology while advancing various technologies and reducing risks.

Equipped with cutting-edge facilities, FLOWIC features specialised tools such as a dynamic cable flex fatigue rig for subsea cable testing, a large-scale test rig for anchoring systems, a Hexapod floating offshore wind scale motion simulator, and a virtual reality studio.

In a related development, Scotland's recent ScotWind Leasing process identified over 19GW of potential floating wind projects, with the Celtic Sea offering further opportunities along the Welsh and Cornish coastlines in the foreseeable future. According to ORE, this pipeline of floating wind projects has the potential to generate over 29,000 jobs and contribute more than £43 billion to the UK economy by 2050. Find out more here.
