This guide is FREE to CIRIA members, sign in to download a copy
This compilation of case studies illustrates how innovative approaches and collaboration led to products, projects or new organisation approaches resulting in sustainability benefits. Each example outlines the challenge, approach and outcome, and woven through the stories are the roles played by the individuals, teams and partnerships who made these innovations possible.
A variety of contexts are covered, between them showing the different ways in which innovation and change can be brought about. They range from organisation-wide initiatives to individual training, the collaborative development of guidance and standards to promote confidence in new techniques, and examples of how clients, suppliers and wider stakeholders have contributed to new ideas on projects of different scales.
Although examples span a range of environmental benefits, the majority have a resource management element including the management of spoil in civil engineering schemes, the introduction of circular economy approaches, measures to reduce water and energy use (and to empower individuals to do so), new techniques that extend the life of structures and the preservation and enhancement of biodiversity.
