Biodiversity is vital to sustain the UK’s society and economy. Improving biodiversity is integral to sustainable development, and biodiversity net gain (BNG) is an approach to embed and demonstrate this. CIRIA, in partnership with CIEEM and IEMA, have recently published guidance on BNG, comprising:

  • Biodiversity net gain • Good practice principles for development (2016)
  • Biodiversity net gain • A practical guide (CIRIA, C776a)
  • Biodiversity net gain • Case studies (CIRIA C776b)
  • CIRIA C776a offers practical advice to achieve BNG in the UK’s land and freshwater environment. It is based on the UK’s good practice principles (2016) for BNG and applies to all types and scales of development, at all stages in the life cycle of development. It is relevant to developers and all other stakeholders wishing to promote, facilitate and deliver BNG.

Organisations were invited to submit short case studies to illustrate how they are approaching BNG, which are reproduced in full in CIRIA C776b. This collection demonstrates the interest and commitment of stakeholders towards achieving BNG.
