While there is recognition that culverts present significant flood risks, there have been few systematic investigations in the UK of blockage risk associated with trash accumulation at culverts and other hydraulic structures. In response to this, the aim of the research presented here has been to advance the knowledge base regarding trash screen blockage and to develop simple tools and methods for assessing the risks associated with blockage at culverts. This research theme was funded through an umbrella project, the Flood Risk Management Research Consortium (phase 2) (FRMRC 2), which was tasked with examining a broad range of flood related issues
This technical note outlines the findings from the project, and is designed to accompany and augment those components of CIRA C689, which deal with the design, maintenance and management of trash screens located at culverts. The outcomes also augment components of the Trash and security screen guide (TSSG) (Environment Agency, 2009), a manual that focuses specifically upon current screen best practice guidance.
This technical note is reasonably high-level in nature, with respect to the scientific detail, conveying findings in a manner accessible to the strategic manager, practitioner and scientist alike. However, if the reader requires a more in-depth understanding of the work, this can be obtained through the relevant academic literature.
