Management of PFAS – lessons learnt

Join us for a virtual conference on polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to discover the latest developments and practical solutions in risk assessment and remediation featuring examples from the UK, Europe, Australia and the USA.

Background
Awareness of known and potential risks to human health and the environment caused by PFAS is growing globally. In the UK, the introduction of more stringent standards, including the recent changes to guidance on the levels of PFAS in drinking water by the Drinking Water Inspectorate, has reinforced the need for the construction industry to find more effective ways to manage PFAS risk in soil and groundwater.

This has led to more research in the past 12 months. On the remediation side, this includes approaches involving treatment at receptor locations to reduce exposure and adsorption-based attenuation strategies for PFAS plumes. The USA, Australia, and some EU countries have put a lot of effort recently into trying to understand the toxicology of PFAS and their degradation products (also known as precursors).

The results from these studies are coming out rapidly. We need to take stock and provide opportunities to share experience and knowledge, and to learn from each other so that we can find sustainable and cost-effective ways to manage this difficult class of contaminants more quickly.

This conference will focus on the latest developments in risk assessment and remediation of PFAS in soil and water, and will share the initial findings of CIRIA’s project to produce the UK’s first comprehensive guidance on PFAS in soil and ground water.

Why attend
  • Hear about the Environment Agency’s recent research into PFAS including their latest regulatory actions and plans.
  • Discuss the latest developments in our understanding of the behaviour of the PFAS family of chemicals (including precursors) in the environment, particularly on:
    • the transport and degradation of different types of PFAS.
    • PFAS release mechanisms: aerial sources, wastewater, leachate, agricultural bio-solids use, surface spills.
    • precursors in site assessment and remediation.
  • Examine how recent guidance reports have helped the industry deal with risks caused by PFAS.
  • Earn valuable CPD.
Who should attend
  • Clients including airports and fire stations
  • Contractors including remediation contractors
  • Consultants
  • Developers
  • Regulators
  • Local authorities
