Construction over abandoned mine workings

Join this pre-recorded webinar which marked CIRIA’s 60th anniversary and shone the spotlight on our heritage guidance that continues to be widely used across industry.

Background
The pre-recorded webinar features CIRIA's Abandoned mine workings manual (C758D). Industry experts will give an overview of the manual’s scope and key features, and delve deeper into four key chapters: site investigation, treatment of mine workings and mine entries, and surface stability.

Since the publication of Construction over abandoned mine workings (SP32) in 1984, the numerous issues associated with abandoned mines are progressively being better understood, with significant advances in knowledge and expertise. The deep coal mining industry has been run down, and this has coincided with increased urbanisation and regeneration of land in areas of former mine workings.

Supported by industry, principally The Coal Authority, CIRIA embarked on a project to update SP32. The Abandoned mine workings manual (C758D) retains much of the information from SP32, but with substantial updates in dealing with the effects of the mining legacy. It also provides further guidance on the planning regime, environmental considerations, legislative framework, and health and safety issues.

The manual is divided into three parts:
  • Historical background and context
  • Residual impacts of past mining
  • Land management and construction in mining areas
The manual offers a risk-based, non-prescriptive approach to the mitigation and remediation of mining legacy issues covering the geographical area of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is aimed at regulators, planning authorities, developers, asset owners and operators, consultants and contractors.
