Background
There is no doubt that human activities are driving biodiversity down. A 2021 study from London's Natural History Museum highlights that almost half of Britain’s natural biodiversity has disappeared over the centuries, mostly due to farming and urban spread. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species shows that 40k+ species are threatened with extinction, including 41% of studied amphibians, 26% of mammals, and 34% of conifers.
Despite this strong decline, there is hope for a world where development and natural habitat goes hand in hand. International leaders are working towards a Biodiversity Framework, while the United Kingdom is spearheading ambitious legislations.
CIRIA's Biodiversity Community of Practice member Richard Thomas (Trustmgt Ltd) states that “the Environmental Act 2021 and Biodiversity Net Gain are the most seismic pieces of environmental legislation to be introduced for a long a time.” Indeed it has already changed how the construction industry integrates biodiversity in its processes. Soon to become mandatory (expected by Winter 2023), our industry is keen on getting ready to deliver Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
This webinar will highlight how the construction industry is moving towards BNG, and despite sometimes challenging draft regulations, how it is achieving biodiversity while delivering on the many associated benefits. Biodiversity advocates will present today’s biodiversity context and evolution alongside practitioners already delivering BNG.
