Grey to Green is a key strategic component in the regeneration of Sheffield’s city centre. Its aim is to transform the Riverside Business District, create a more attractive environment within which to live and work and to attract investment. Twenty five swale cells in linear sequence surrounded by gardens function as SuDS features and meeting places. Use of sculpture and generous footpaths establish a definitive sense of place and mark this area out as a distinctive and desirable business address.

The area was once dominated by an unattractive dual carriageways and complex junctions severing areas of townscape. The completion of the new inner relief road in 2008 diverted much of the traffic away from the Riverside. The City’s intention was to forge a distinctive townscape from the redundant highways, making full use of the generous spaces available to introduce new activities and a very different type of environment that would soften the surrounding architecture. This 0.7km project forms the first phase of a projected 1.3km green corridor.

Sheffield lies at the foot of the Pennines, at the point where three fast-flowing rivers, the Don, the Loxley and the Sheaf meet. In June 2007 extreme rain overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems, causing the rivers to overflow, resulting in widespread flooding with devastating impact on the city. Grey to Green forms a part of the city’s efforts to better manage surface water whilst providing the multiple benefits of SuDS. Flows are diverted away from the sewer utilising the landscape rather than contributing to river flows in intense storms through uncontrolled discharge.

There will be a 15 minute walk to the site (with extreme weather unlikely) but please bring appropriate footwear and clothing. PPE will not be necessary.

Why attend

The speakers have been involved in delivering an innovative approach to public realm and the highway environment. The objectives of this seminar and site visit are to:

• Announce the winner of the SuDS Champion 2019 award
• Share an update on the Grey to Green scheme and future aspirations for the city
• Provide an overview of the design philosophy and the challenges of implementing the Grey to Green scheme, particularly in relation to the needs of inner city highways management
• Visit and explore the Grey to Green site to understand its function and benefits
• Provide a forum to discuss SuDS delivery as part of inner city regeneration
