2019 - A year of change for SuDS?
This susdrain event will discuss how 2019 might be a year of change for SuDS. Our presenters will share information and knowledge on what is changing and is likely to change in England and Wales in the areas of SuDS adoption, delivery, policy and research

Background
After years of slow progress, could 2019 see a step change in SuDS delivery, or just be another stumble? We bring together a panel of experts and an interested audience to reflect on recent changes in planning, policy and practice that may signify real progress. Changes include:
- The Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, published in 2018 which explicitly encourages the use of SuDS to manage surface water, deliver multiple benefits and enhance Natural Capital.
- Changes to the National Planning Policy Framework and associated Guidance which promotes green infrastructure and unless inappropriate requires major developments to incorporate SuDS.
- The commencement of Schedule 3 of the FWMA (2010) by the Welsh Government for 7th January 2019.
- Some sewerage undertakers are starting to embrace SuDS, with a number of them including programmes to deliver SuDS in their recently submitted Business Plans.
- Water UK has shared a pre-implementation version of Sewers for Adoption (SfA8) that includes requirements for SuDS to enable them to be maintained by sewerage undertakers under SfA.
All this is happening at a time of increasing awareness of how the climate is changing, the impacts this could have and the need to plan for resilience. The new UK Climate Projections 2018 (UKCP18) confirm an increased chance of milder, wetter winters and hotter, drier summers, an increase in the frequency and intensity of extremes and rising sea level.
Could the current focus on future adaptation and recognition of the need to deliver multiple benefits signal widespread implementation of SuDS in England? This workshop will cover current policy, research, experiences of delivery in Wales and the future role of sewerage undertakers in SuDS delivery.
Why attend?
The speakers have a wealth of experience and have been involved in planning, managing local flood risk and delivering SuDS for a number of years. The objectives of this seminar are to:
- Provide an update of where the industry is with regards to SuDS delivery and adoption
- Update and share early experience of delivering Schedule 3 in Wales
- Share a vision for the role that a sewerage undertaker has for delivering SuDS
- Outline how changes to Sewers for Adoption 8 may support SuDS delivery
