Infrastructure resilience: risk and response workshop

A workshop examining the resilience of infrastructure systems - bringing together leaders to understand the issues and creating the tools & approaches to deal with them and, importantly, implementing the solutions either as a proof of concept or operationally.

Background

UK infrastructure faces increasing pressures and risks vulnerability from a number of factors including; frequency & severity of natural hazard events; increasing dependence on services; larger populations relying on the same supplies; increased interconnections between networks; and un-coordinated & reactive response to events. CIRIA’s 2016/17 Infrastructure Resilience event series (www.ciria.org/IRseries) identified a number of issues and challenges faced by practitioners; many of these related to:

  • The fundamental aspects such as the common definitions and vocabularies
  • Various aspects of organisational approach

However, in order to proactively assess and manage risks, the likelihood, location, timing and/or severity of hazards need to be understood. Hazards can be considered as falling into the following:

  • External events – which can be primarily considered as environmental hazards or combinations thereof
  • Human factors – ranging from demands on the infrastructure to deliberate acts of sabotage
  • Component failure – where the infrastructure is unable to perform due to failure in one or more of its component parts

At this event these hazards and industry responses will be summarised, as well as a discussion on possible areas of future work and next steps.

Why Attend

Delegates at this event will:

  • Explore environmental, performance related and human risk to infrastructure
  • Share approaches to assessing risk and resilience
  • Examine cross cutting challenges across sectors
