Background
Wales with its unique set of legislation and drivers is developing the ‘perfect storm’ for the delivery of sustainable drainage. January 2019 sees Welsh Government implementing Schedule 3 of the Flood and Water Management Act that mandates the inclusion of SuDS on new developments and formally introduces SuDS Approval Bodies.
Wales also has seen a number of high profile and large scale retrofit SuDS schemes. One of the most recent and largest schemes is Greener Grangetown. This scheme manages runoff from 12 streets, improves the quality of the urban spaces and places and delivers other multiple benefits. It manages runoff from roofs and roads in Grangetown, using over 100 rain gardens and 135 trees before discharging into the River Taff.
Greener Grangetown has been delivered through a partnership of Cardiff Council; Dwr Cymru Welsh Water; Natural Resources Wales; Arup; ERH Communications and Civil Engineering Ltd with additional financial support from the Landfill Communities Fund.
This susdrain event will discuss the approach to delivering new build and retrofit SuDS in Wales and provide an opportunity to visit and discuss the Greener Grangetown SuDS scheme with those involved in its design and delivery.
The site visit will be in September in the UK – so despite the good summer so far and the fact that schools will have started please bring footwear and clothes appropriate for the weather. PPE will not be necessary.
Why attend?
The speakers have been involved in developing approaches to deliver SuDS on the ground and have been involved with SuDS policy and delivery in Wales for a number of years. The objectives of this seminar and site visit are to:
- Share an update on how Wales is progressing SuDS
- Provide an overview of the design philosophy and challenges of Greener Grangetown
- Visit and explore the rain gardens and blue green infrastructure included with Greener Grangetown
Provide a forum to discuss SuDS delivery in Wales and key design aspects of Greener Grangetown
