Annual debate: The urban regeneration of our existing cities
CIRIA’s third annual debate examines the issues surrounding the urban regeneration of our cities. This event will bring together highly regarded senior professionals from the engineering and built environment sector to discuss 21st Century challenges in regenerating our existing cities by balancing economic growth, environmental protection and social inclusion.
Background
Urban regeneration is one of the many issues helping to shape 21st Century cities. Successful regeneration prevents urban decline; it can revitalise derelict urban areas by providing the spark that reignites positive economic, social and environmental impacts. Regeneration includes the revitalisation of brownfield sites and a rebuilding of the city’s economic base.
So what makes for successful regeneration projects? Amongst the variety of issues presented by an ageing city, how can regeneration schemes focus on newer challenges like decarbonisation, self-sufficiency and wellbeing whilst tackling the more traditional issues presented by population growth, security and biodiversity loss?
Of increasing concern is the question of urban density; is the huge demand for housing and pressure to maximise profit through high-density schemes leading to an unhealthy variety of land uses? In connection with this, what is the role of public space in the regeneration of cities?
CIRIA’s third annual debate will bring together leading professionals across the built environment and constructions sectors to debate their ideas and experiences for addressing the complex challenges of an urban future.

Format
Beginning at 18:00, each of the speakers will speak for ten minutes before questions and debate from the floor.
The event will be followed by a networking drinks reception from 19:30.
