Biodiversity policies and regulations are continually evolving, with the most recent major change being the requirement for biodiversity net gain (BNG) which became mandatory in 2024. As a result of this legislation developers must demonstrate how their proposed development will deliver a BNG of 10%. The Biodiversity Community of Practice (CoP) was created in 2022 in response to the changing policy landscape, but also in response to a growing understanding of the impact of the built environment on biodiversity, and the need to ensure the industry plays a positive role in mitigating this impact and restoring nature. The CoP offers a platform for biodiversity practitioners to share knowledge and build capacity to improve biodiversity across their company’s operations and value chain, while influencing the industry more broadly and contributing towards goal 15 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The CoP is also responsible for the BIG Biodiversity Challenge Awards and the creation of a series of webinars showcasing good practice from past award winners.Organisations can become members giving them the opportunity to shape the development of the CoP’s programme of events; join the BIG Biodiversity Challenge Awards judging panel; and have a greater profile on the CoP’s dedicated website. This is an on-going project, but membership of the group is on an annual basis. We are currently seeking new members for the 2025 calendar year.
