Projects underway

CIRIA’s collaborative research results in the the design and production of high quality and authoritative industry guidance. Find out more about the benefits of collaborative research.

The CIRIA projects listed below are currently underway, please select a project for more information.  Alternatively, you can download the latest programme in document form here

Construction Innovation Alliance
Formed in 2019, this community of practice of infrastructure clients and Tier 1 suppliers has been sharing knowledge, experiences and approaches through baselining surveys, discussion workshops and information papers.

Community of Practice - Sustainable management of soil
This project will create a community of practice which will undertake a number of activities to support long term good practice in the sustainable management of soil.

susdrain - the community for SuDS
susdrain is an exciting community that provides up to date guidance, support case studies and photos as well as discussion forums and networking opportunities.

Management of gully pots for improved runoff quality
This scoping study will identify the changes in regulation, research, technology and practice that have occurred in the past 20 years with a view to subsequently updating the guide.

Asset management of blue green infrastructure – guiding principles
This project sets out to develop an asset management framework document for the efficient management of blue green infrastructure.

Community of practice - Biodiversity Interest Group (BIG)
This project will create a community of practice for improving biodiversity value through a practitioners’ network focused on collaboration and sharing knowledge to enhance and improve biodiversity across transport, utilities, housing & development.

Greening coastal infrastructure through eco-engineering
This project investigates how to use eco-engineering on waterside infrastructure, particularly in coastal and riverside regions.

Guidance on enabling community maintenance for local flood risk management
This project will develop guidance on approaches to empower local community groups to undertake safe, appropriate and routine maintenance of local flood risk management infrastructure (surface water and ordinary watercourses).

Perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS) in soil and water environments
This project will produce guidance to improve awareness and understanding of PFAS and legislations, helping practitioners to understand their responsibilities and liabilities as well as support them in managing risk.

Marine infrastructure effects – improving coastal biodiversity (CON246)
CIRIA is the network coordinator to help promote and raise awareness of this project in order to maximise its uptake and potential benefits and impact.

Piling good practice guidance
CIRIA proposes to undertake research to produce a new suite of guides covering the techniques, plant and equipment and materials of today. The intention is to produce a second generation of these guides building on the success of the earlier guides.

Responding to the lessons learnt from flooding
The aim of this project is to provide guidance on how to implement the recommendations contained in the published reports and from other lessons learned.

Thrust blocks on buried pressure pipelines
This project will review and update CIRIA's 1994 guide to the design of thrust blocks for buried pressure pipelines to reflect new materials - particularly polyethylene, practices and changes to standards and codes.

Guidance on the delivery of blue roofs
This project will develop guidance on blue roofs and the delivery of multiple benefits to improve confidence in their specification, design and delivery.

Innovative site investigation hub
This project will keep contaminated land practitioners, regulators and other stakeholders up-to-date with latest development, understand the benefits and limitations, theory and practical, safe and cost effective application of these new approaches

The UXO Forum
This project has been designed to bring real change to the industry through a series of events and other tools.

Community of Practice – Managing construction risk
CIRIA has developed a new Community of Practice focusing on risk management in construction.

Application of Eurocode 7 to the design of flood embankments
Eurocode 7 is the EU standard for the design of geotechnical structures. Its use in public sector works became mandatory in EU member states in 2010 and it has been implemented in varying ways by member states.

Tunnel management advances since C671 – good practice guidance
This guide will enable asset owners to have a trusted practical guide that can support technical and commercial decision making, especially upon increasing tunnel asset stocks and aging underground infrastructure.

Community of Practice - Driving Net Zero Carbon
This new initiative brings together sustainability practitioners from across multiple sectors and disciplines within infrastructure to help the Government drive the pathways to NZC 2050 .

NERC Environmental Risks to Infrastructure Programme (ERIIP)
The Environmental Risks to Infrastructure Innovation Programme is a five-year, £5m initiative, which will be driven by the needs of the business community and decision-makers.

Reinforced cast in situ concrete
Phase 2 of the project is underway now and the focus of the research will be on defects and error associated with reinforced cast in-situ concrete.
