Net Zero Carbon Offsite Champions (P3307)
BUILDOFFSITE (BOS) advocates the use of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) across the built environment. A key ambition in its five-year Manifesto is to embed sustainability and drive net zero carbon across the MMC sector. Fiscal incentives for carbon reduction tailored to offsite methods are critical to improving carbon value and supporting PAS 2080 and BOPAS accreditations.
This project will provide the empirical evidence needed to demonstrate MMC’s impact on carbon reduction. CIRIA and BOS will jointly assess and quantify the Net Zero Carbon benefits achieved through offsite construction methods.
An earlier CIRIA/BUILDOFFSITE report, Quantifiable Benefits of MMC (2020), highlighted that construction waste was the only environmental impact for which reliable data existed. Five years on, there has been a major shift: clients now specify carbon performance requirements, route maps have emerged, and standards are advancing. Measurable carbon savings are being delivered through innovative offsite solutions.
The project will capture 8–10 case studies demonstrating leadership in net zero performance across MMC categories, materials and client sectors. These will quantify embodied and operational carbon savings, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and related benefits. Findings will highlight exemplar projects and identify lessons for wider industry adoption.
The new guidance will align with existing CIRIA resources and provide a foundation for demonstrating measurable Net Zero outcomes in offsite construction.
