New guidance: Asset management for blue-green infrastructure: a framework (C825)

This new guidance (C825) sets out how established asset management principles can be applied to the natural and semi-natural systems that manage water and deliver wider ecosystem services. It is principles-based, aligned to recognised asset management standards, and designed to help organisations plan, manage, and adapt blue-green infrastructure so it delivers sustained value across its whole life.

The framework addresses the distinctive characteristics of blue-green infrastructure, including multifunctionality, ecological change over time, collaborative delivery models, and shared benefits. It highlights what each of these means for governance, decision making, information management, risk, and maintenance. The aim is to complement, rather than replace, existing sector-specific guidance and statutory requirements, giving organisations a consistent and practical reference for embedding blue-green infrastructure as a core part of resilient, sustainable infrastructure systems.

The new guidance will be invaluable to those involved in the planning, delivery, operation, and stewardship of blue-green infrastructure including water and sewerage companies, local planning authorities, developers, risk management authorities, highway authorities, and infrastructure contractors. It is built to work across organisation types and sizes.
