Minimising carbon emissions using (precast) concrete

Join this webinar featuring practical examples of good practice seeking to minimise carbon emissions from the use of (precast) concrete.

Background
The manufacture and use of cement in mortar and concrete accounts for around 8% of carbon emissions worldwide, so anything that can be done to reduce the roughly 600 kilograms of carbon dioxide released for every tonne of cement produced must be done to help the overall drive towards Net Zero.

Around 30 billion tonnes of concrete are used every year, which represents a 3-fold increase on a per capita basis in last 40 years. It is a versatile and long-lasting construction material but has a colossal carbon footprint.

Reducing the cement content and using alternative materials such as slag and fly ash reduces the environmental impact of concrete, but the carbon emissions are still significant. As coal is phased out supplies of fly ash will diminish, and there is an inherent risk in moving away from a tried and tested formula.

The webinar, hosted by Buildoffsite and CIRIA’s Driving Net Zero Carbon and Managing Construction Risk Communities of Practice, will showcase examples of good practice seeking to minimise carbon emissions from the use of (precast) concrete in all its forms whilst also considering the construction risks.

Buildoffsite is the voice of the offsite construction industry. For more information about membership, please contact Dirk Vennix.

CIRIA's Communities of Practice (CoPs)
  • Driving Net Zero Carbon CoP brings together sustainability practitioners from across multiple sectors and disciplines within infrastructure to help the Government drive the pathways to NZC 2050. For more information and to get involved, please contact Dr Andy Moores.
  • Managing Construction Risk CoP brings together practitioners from the construction and insurance sectors to help improve the management of risk and financial performance. For more information and to get involved, please contact Dirk Vennix.
