Bombs away - UXO: what is the risk and do we understand it?

More than 70 years have passed since the last bombs of World War Two fell on the UK, yet every year we are still presented with the challenge of disposing of air delivered ordnance, the majority of which is discovered on construction projects.

REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED

Background
Recent high profile incidents such as the closure of the A38M Aston Expressway in Birmingham (May 2017) and the closure of London City airport in February 2018 have continued to highlight the considerable risk presented by unexploded ordnance (UXO). In total 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment RLC disposed of more than 452 pieces of air delivered ordnance up to 1 June 2017.

In recent years CIRIA has produced good practice guidance documents to set and define the process for the management of risks associated with UXO, this includes Unexploded ordnance (UXO) A guide for the construction industry (C681), and Assessment and management of unexploded ordnance (UXO) risk in the marine environment (C754).

Despite the availability of these guidance documents, construction professionals need to know how and when to factor the hazards of UXO into their projects. This webinar will provide an overview of CIRIA’s work on UXO, and feature a presentation from Skanska on the continuing risks presented by UXO, asking the question – do we fully understand it.

Why attend
- Discuss progress in UXO risk assessment and management in land projects since the publication of CIRIA report C681 Unexploded ordnance (UXO) A guide for the construction industry in 2009;
- Outline CIRIA’s new project on UXO and the construction cycle.
- Showcase good practice
