Managing asbestos in soil - ten years on, what is new?

This event will give an overview of how we are managing asbestos in soil and launch the first app, Asbestos Site Aid, to support site workers when they spot potential asbestos containing materials on sites

SOLD OUT EVENT

Background

Asbestos containing materials (ACMs) were widely used in construction, and it is difficult (and sometimes not possible) to ensure that all asbestos is removed before demolition. Building rubble is liable to contain ACM, and may contain free fibres. Asbestos from soil has attracted a lot of attentions in the past ten years because recent case laws demonstrated that clients, consultants and contractors could be liable if they did not follow good practice when dealing with asbestos from soil.

Since 2014, CIRIA has produced guidance on asbestos in soil.  This started with C733 Asbestos in soil and made ground: a guide to understanding and managing risks (the first guidance of its kind in the past 20 years), to the publication of a site guide and now an app which is aimed at ground and site workers.  Later on 2020, CIRIA will also launched an eLearning course for non-licenced work.
