Better water management through the planning system

This event will mark the launch of the new guidance: 'Delivering better water management through the planning system'; engaging guidance on how the planning system can enable integrated water management.
PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED

Background

Planning for water provides opportunities to design our towns and cities to be greener, wealthier, healthier, more attractive, more biodiverse and more resilient to climate change.

Without better water management development can lead to water shortages, flooding and environmental damage. CIRIA’s new guidance supports planning for water through the delivery of integrated water management (IWM): a concept that brings together a range of interventions to make the most of opportunities to improve people’s lives, whilst also avoiding and mitigating the risks from too little or too much water, as well as risks related to water pollution.

A planning approach based on IWM can provide multiple benefits and ecosystem services that contribute to natural capital while mitigating and removing risks, to create more liveable and sustainable places. Multiple benefits are achieved when different stakeholders work in partnership to achieve a range of outcomes that meet their individual and collective ambitions.

The guidance explains how effective local plan policies and strategies - underpinned by effective engagement and evidence - provide a successful, integrated approach to managing water. The key characteristics of good local policy for delivering IWM and it and how this fits within the planning policy framework are clearly set out in the guidance. Advice on making good policy is also illustrated by examples of good local plan policy and good practice is showcased through case studies.

This guidance and free seminar will support local government, particularly Local Planning Authorities, giving them the confidence to develop policies and appropriately engage with stakeholders to ensure that high quality developments with good water management are cost effectively delivered.
