Can industry improve dealing with contaminated sediments?

This event will explore how contaminated sediments should be managed in the UK. It will also highlight guidance developed in the new CIRIA report C781, Contaminated sediments: a guide for risk assessment and management. It will also explore areas where the industry can do better when dealing with contaminated sediments from leaching coastal landfills, harbour and docks projects, navigation dredging and other activities

Background

A wide variety of contaminants can be released into the water environment (egg through permitted discharges, accidental release, surface runoff and natural erosion). Once part of the water environment, contaminants can become associated with sediment through physical mixing or chemical reactions.

Contaminated sediment can pose environmental risks and present problems for the planning and delivery of constructions, management and maintenance activities in the water environment.

Contaminated sediment: a guide for risk assessment and management is available for order.

Objectives

This event will explore how risk that contaminated sediments  poses should be assessed and managed in the UK. It will also highlight innovative approaches in other countries.

It will also highlight good practice developed by the new CIRIA report C781 Contaminated sediment: a guide for risk assessment and management.
