The construction industry is the largest consumer of resources in the UK; with approximately 400 million tonnes consumed every year. Construction, demolition and excavation (CD&E; including dredging) also generated around three fifths (61%) of total UK waste in 2016.
The Infrastructure Carbon Review (ICR) (2013) identified infrastructure as contributing a significant risk to the UK’s ability to meet its 80% emissions reduction target from 1990 levels by 2050. The adoption and implementation of circular economy and materials resource efficiency on building and infrastructure projects is increasingly seen by many as critical to industry’s drive to tackle over reliance, excessive disposal and unsustainable use of resources. Increasingly planning policy such as the emerging London Plan is placing requirements on developers to calculate whole lifecycle carbon emissions and demonstrate actions taken to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions.
There is growing awareness of the concepts amongst clients, designers and contractors, but a key challenge remains in adoption. The fourth annual CIRIA debate, sponsored by Grosvenor, will focus on how the construction industry can change its deeply embedded practices and embrace new approaches to sustainability.
