Risk assessment and waste management for contaminated land
Are you ready for some of the new challenges that lie ahead? This event will explore recent developments on site investigation, including how new techniques & tools can help with assessing contaminated sites in the UK, particularly to deal with new challenges such as extreme climate events. The afternoon will look at the latest changes in waste management on contaminated land.
Background
Things seem to be changing for the contaminated land industry. The recent government publication A Green Future: Our 25 Year Plan to Improve the Environment stated the need to improve waste management and soil degradation in both urban and rural areas in the UK. It also highlighted the need to manage problems caused by climate change.
There are a number of issues that need to be explored, these include: whether the current methods of assessing risk in contaminated land are sufficient to deal with new challenges? How issues like flooding affect landfill gas assessment? Are there new risk assessment techniques that could help to assess risk across large sites containing difficult contaminants such as asbestos? Are we getting any better at defining what waste is? How will changes for the tax regime for waste in April 2018 affect the way that waste from contaminated projects is managed?
Split into two parts, this event will consist of presentations workshops and a panel session.

- how assessment of vapour risk could be affected by extreme climate events such as flooding,
- the latest developments on laboratory analysis including their advantages and limitations,
- how drones could be used for difficult sites, their advantages, limitations and the license needed
- new tools to helping people to deal with difficult contaminants such as asbestos,
- are we getting any better in defining what waste in contaminated land projects is? How can we deal with cases in the ‘grey areas’?
- how the latest changes in tax and regulations will affect how waste is managed on contaminated projects
It will also give you an opportunity to discuss with technical experts the above topics via workshops and a panel session.
