Programme

Challenges and issues with Eurocode 2 - Charles Goodchild,  The Concrete Centre

Charles will discuss some of the more contentious issues with Eurocode 2, including how the code addresses flat slabs and shear walls.

Concrete: technology and practice - Richard Day, The Concrete Society
Richard will address some of the many issues faced by The Concrete Society. These will include the challenges  of identity testing / quality management and assurance of concrete test cubes on site. He will also discuss concrete surface finishes and how these are seen, produced and interpreted from specifications.

Materials 4 life: Biomimetic multi-scale damage immunity for construction materials - Professor Bob Lark, Cardiff University
Professor Lark will provide an overview of an EPSRC funded collaborative project on self-healing concrete. His presentation will highlight the project's aims and drivers, as well as a discussion on:
  • Microencapsulation of healing agents
  • The development of bacterial healing
  • The use of shape memory polymers to inhibit cracking and enhance healing and the development of capillary and flow networks to facilitate the repair of repeating damage.
Innovations in concrete fixings and Rebar connections - Imad Al-Mobayed, Hilti
In this presentation, Imad Al-Mobayad will introduce advances in screw anchor technology, a high performance mortar for concrete fixings and rebar connectors, and the use of hollow drill bits. He will also discuss the HILTI HIT Method for Rebar connection as compared to EC2 method.

The event will provide a forum to facilitate the exchange of ideas, problems, thoughts, challenges and risks within all areas of concrete.

The presentations will be followed by a networking lunch, and a series of round table workshop sessions, where delegates will have the opportunity to discuss the issues that were highlighted in the presentations.
