How to deal with petrochemicals on site

This training provides an overview of the risk assessment for site contaminated with petrochemicals.

Ticket information
This event is free for BRMF and LACL members.
This event costs  £190 + VAT for non members.

When?
18 November 2014, 9:45am - 4:15pm.

Background

Petrochemicals are one of the most commonly found contaminants in UK land.  This is partly because of the legacy left from the industrial revolution almost 200 years ago, but also because of leakages from older petrol stations, underground oil tanks and other oil and gas related activities.

This training provides an overview of the risk assessment for sites contaminated with petrochemicals. It will discuss how to select and implement remediation approaches in light of recent publications of C4SL values on Benzo(a)pyrene and Benzene.

A workshop session will be used to bring together the aspects learnt during the earlier part of the day and bring out key learning points.

Who should attend?

Local authorities, clients, house builders, consultants, contractors.

Required level of knowledge
The workshop assumes a general working knowledge of the current UK regulatory framework for assessment of land contamination including principles set out in CLR 11, revised Part 2a statutory guidance and C4SL.

CPD
This event has a value of 5 hours towards your CPD. As recognised by ICE, CIOB, CIBSE, IstructE.

Programme

09:45   Registration and refreshments

10:15   Petrochemicals – their nature and their impact
An introduction to the terminology used in discussing fuel hydrocarbons and discussion of the differences between the hydrocarbon groups which define petrol, diesel, kerosene and heating oils. Tetraethyl lead and it’s replacements MTBE, Ethanol, TBA. Other additives which may be present.

10:45   Mineral Oil, TPH, GRO/EPH or TPHCWG
What do these mean, can you directly compare, do you need different screening values? Methodologies used to assess petroleum hydrocarbons as a group, have changed as new analytical approaches have been developed.

11:30   Refreshments

11:45   Investigation of Sites impacted by Petrochemicals
Discussion of LNAPL / DNAPL and smear zones. Field methods used to assess petroleum hydrocarbons on site. Appropriate use of PID screening. What are MIP and LIF how are they used? Risk assessment for sites contaminated with petrochemicals, importance of sampling beneath the water table.

12:30   Appropriate remediation approaches for hydrocarbons and selection of remediation methods
A discussion of in-situ and ex-situ methods and site information needs that are required for selecting an approach. Will include an example looking at spill emergency response and clean up.

13:15   Lunch

14:15   Verification of Remediation and Multiple Lines of Evidence
What data is needed to provide confidence that remediation is complete?

14:45   Health and safety and site issues
What should you see in a Site Health and Safety Plan for work on a site that uses or stores petroleum hydrocarbons. Safe methods of working and exclusion zones. Permits to work and work plans. Includes a short film.

15:15   Refreshments

15:30   Workshop session
Participants will be split into team and we will then play Hydrocarbon Jeopardy to review and discuss information presented in the course and try to address questions that have not yet been raised.

16:15   Summary and conclusions
