Site investigation for contaminated land

This course will cover the elements of site investigation from preparation of the Request for a Proposal (RFP), through the phases of investigation and the production of the Site Investigation Report.

This event is free for BRMF and LACL members.
This event costs £190 + VAT for non members.

Background
Site investigations for contaminated land are undertaken for a variety of reasons ranging from due diligence associated with a property sale, assessment of site condition for the purpose of redevelopment and planning to determine the site as ‘contaminated’. In the UK, site investigations are designed following the BSI standards BS5930, BS10175 and Eurocode 7. CIRIA has also published guidance on site investigation designs with respect to specific issues such as ground gases and soil vapour.

A site investigation generally begins with a desk study and site walkover. It is important when scoping an investigation that the objectives are well defined so that the collected data are suitable for use. A sampling plan and data quality plan should also be considered.

This course will cover the elements of site investigation from preparation of the Request for a Proposal (RFP), through the phases of investigation and the production of the Site Investigation Report.

Who should attend?
Local authorities, clients, house builders, consultants, contractors

Required level of knowledge

This event has a value of 5 hours towards your CPD (As recognised by ICE, CIOB, RICS, CIBSE, IstructE).

Programme

09:45 Registration and refreshments

10:15 Principles of site investigation
The first module will provide an introduction to site investigation discussing the reasons why it might be needed and how it may affect the overall risk assessment.

10:35 Preparation of an RFP
This module will discuss the problems encountered with RFPs and the need to ensure there are no ambiguities in the proposed scope of works. What is the purpose of the investigation, is it contaminated land or geotechnical or both? Participants will be asked to bring with them an RFP, consultant’s proposal and report to use during the day.

11:30 Refreshments

11:45 Desk study
This module will discuss the information needs for the desk study and the development of the initial conceptual site model. Participant will undertake review of site information and discuss findings.

12:30 Lunch

13:30 The site walkover
This module discusses the evidence that is being examined in the site walkover and the need to be alert to visual and olfactory data that may assist in guiding the intrusive investigation.

14:00 Scoping an intrusive investigation
An overview of investigation methods discussing thedifferences in data obtained through trial pitting or drilling including an introduction to different drilling techniques and a discussion on the installation of ground water and gas monitoring wells.

14:45 Sampling
This module will discuss the methods used for sampling soils and ground waters and the need to develop a sampling strategy and quality plan. This will also include discussion of tiered approach and the use of field analysis in site investigations.

15:30 Refreshments

15:45 Workshop session
Participants will be asked to review an RFP and proposal. Using the information gained within the course they will be asked is the RFP fit for purpose, ie, does it ask the right questions of the consultant and does the proposal meet the needs.
