General fixings - guidance on selection and whole-life management (C777D)

This guide is an update of CIRIA TN137 published in 1991, which was a response to the need for guidance on the selection and whole life of ‘general’ fixings; an accompanying guide on safety-critcal fixings is also available (CIRIA C778), and there is some overlap between the two publications because many general fixings are safety critical, but they are different in scope and content.

This publication combines a wealth of technical knowledge about fixings and explores management approaches to the different activities involved. It explains a risk-based management approach to underpin response to the technical and management decisions involved. Fixings to the most common substrates (steelwork, timber, concrete, masonry) are explored and the factors to be taken into account are discussed.

This publication provides guidance that needs to be adapted to circumstances. This is because of the potentially extremely wide scope of the subject and the need for all those involved to make risk and value assessments relevant to their own circumstances. However, there are considerable challenges in managing the various practical tasks involved and the key messages provided should not be taken lightly.
