Sustainable remediation for petrol station & forecourt sites
This event will give an overview of innovative techniques being used for the treatment of land contamination at petrol filling stations
Background
There is general agreement amongst the UK political parties that sale of new petrol and diesel powered cars will be phased out by the middle of the 21st century. As a consequence, the number of filing stations in the UK is expected to decrease markedly as new means of powering cars takes over and fossil fuels become an “alternative fuel”.
This in turn will release brownfield land for new development. As many filling stations are in urban areas these will be ideally located for residential development. However, many of these sites are contaminated and need to be remediated. Of the available remedial techniques can't be applied to forecourts because of their small size so the choice of treatment is primarily limited.
Additionally, the approaches to choosing remedial treatment have changed as our understanding of the different methods have advanced over the years. Most of the good practice guidance on remedial treatment is more than 10 years old.
There needs to be more opportunity to share experience.
