Background
Any construction project, irrespective of the location, size or nature of the development, will have environmental consequences. This is particularly true when working on the coast or at sea given the often sensitive nature of the environment and the importance of this area for human activities. However, good management and construction processes can avoid or minimise impacts.

The task of reducing the likelihood or severity of impacts is the responsibility of site-based staff, as well as many others. Accountability at the site level demands high standards of environmental awareness by trained and experienced staff who can effectively manage the site and any issues that arise with the urgency they require.

To support effective management of these impacts, CIRIA has produced the second edition of its coastal and marine environmental site guide (C744, 2015) and pocket book (C745, 2016).

The guidance is primarily aimed at site-based staff and deals with environmental issues in the construction phase. However, it is recommended that it is also consulted during the planning, development and tendering stage of a project, as changes during the execution stage can result in additional costs and delay.

Objectives:
  • To present the environmental issues that may occur on coastal and marine construction site and the current best practice to tackle them
  • To present the second edition of CIRIA’s coastal and marine good practice site guide and pocket book
  • To highlight how the guidance can assist site staff reduce impacts on the environment and neighbours
  • To raise environmental awareness and help site staff minimise risks of extra costs, fines, delays and damage to reputation
