This event will launch the update of the guide 'Old Waterfront Walls - management maintenance and rehabilitation'.

Background
This seminar will provide an overview of recent developments in in practices and technologies over the past years covering the design, repair, upgrading and construction of masonry waterfront structures including old waterfront walls and gravity walls constructed with stone masonry, brick blocks or mass concrete.
The seminar will also launch the update manual 'Old waterfront walls' RP997 and is intended for all those involved in masonry waterfront structures ownership and management, e.g. ports, developers and coast protection authorities.
Recent developments in practice, and incorporated into the updated CIRIA guidance, include:
- The introduction of risk based assessment and management of structures
- Design methods, particularly with respect to computer simulation
- Techniques for invasive and non-invasive survey, monitoring and analysis techniques, with increased use of remote sensing and advances in IT
- Design standards have been amended, as other factors have become more significant or severe such as vehicle loadings, climate change, wave patterns, weather extremes and other processes affecting performance
- Techniques and materials for localised, small-medium scale and large-scale repair and refurbishment have advanced
- The legislative and regulatory framework and landscape
