Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) forum (P3282)

Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made substances that can be found in soils, surface water, and groundwater near fire training grounds, historic incident sites, water treatment sites, landfills, etc.

The contaminants have attracted more attention both from the media and the contaminated land industry around the world recently.  Managing PFAS risk is considered to be ‘difficult and complex’ by many people in this country.

There is a growing number of PFAS research and guidance being carried out and published around the world.  CIRIA will publish the first UK comprehensive guidance on risk assessment and management of PFAS in soil and water in the summer of 2023. However the subject is evolving very quickly and there is no one place that people can get up-to-date information.

Project objectives

• Provide a single platform to:
  • discuss issues they have will PFAS management
  • be kept up to date latest research and development in the subject
  • examine what are the available risk assessment and remediation approaches
  • explore what is considered to be good practice
  • learn from each other and the rest of the world
• Encourage more research and development
• Improve the way that UK practitioners manage PFAS
