Cast in-situ concrete  - collaborative working for zero defects

 
CIRIA seeks industry partners for a new project exploring defects associated with cast in-situ concrete.

Defects are a constant irritation to the industry, are costly to fix, lead to delays and undermine industry initiatives to improve performance and productivity. The construction industry has the skills and capability to adapt to new designs and new approaches to deliver iconic buildings . There is no single root cause that leads to construction defects and therefore no single solution. Getting to zero defects and right first time  requires consideration at all stages of construction, from client specifications through to client acceptance on completion. It also requires the client and supply chain to work collaboratively to find the best way of achieving this outcome.

Following industry engagement and with the findings from the Get it Right Initiative research, this project will focus on defects associated with cast in-situ concrete, which has the greatest frequency of error and greatest financial impact. CIRIA has received a letter of support from the the Get it Right Initiative.

The new CIRIA guide will explore the common problems encountered, the mechanisms that lead to poor outcomes and how zero defects might be achieved through collaborative approaches and implementing other measures. The guidance will aim to help improve current practices and facilitate change and good practice case studies will be included. It will also enable those with a role in procurement, design and construction to better understand their role in reducing defect risk.
