What is the path to sustainable infrastructure?

CIRIA was delighted to hear from two sector leaders at our very well attended third Annual lecture at Tideway in the Cottons Centre, London on 19 April 2023.

Andy Mitchell CBE, Chief Executive of Tideway, delivered a keynote address on delivering resilience across new and aging infrastructure, stating: “What we mean by sustainable infrastructure has changed significantly over recent years, and rightly so. We all, individually and corporately, need to understand what we can do to deliver a more sustainable built environment, as we all have a role to play in this.” He provided a number of fascinating and frank insights on Tideway’s impact on its communities in London and Tideway’s legacy ambitions to influence the delivery of more sustainable infrastructure projects in the future.

Joanna Gilroy, Group Director of Sustainability at Balfour Beatty, gave her inspiring thoughts on the opportunities to make societies more climate resilient and sustainable. She challenged us to face “the rhino in the room” and accelerate the pace of change to tackle the climate and nature emergency including making this collaboration a business movement by speaking a different language, stating: “We need to move away from our siloed thinking around carbon, and realise that we are aiming for sustainable development. This requires a new business mindset which understands and balances natural capital, societal capital alongside profit.”
