Background

English Partnerships were granted outline planning permission for the Upton site in 1997. In 2001, with revised government guidance and in partnership with Upton development, Northampton Borough Council and the Princes Foundation embarked on a project to create an urban extension that would promote best practice in sustainable urban growth.

The sustainable drainage scheme that forms part of that approach has been developed in accordance with government guidelines and approved by the Environment Agency. This scheme incorporates permeable paving and swales to improve water quality and amenity before surface water discharges to the River Nene. It is also practically designed for exceedance and flood routeways.

The site at Upton forms part of an overall strategic approach to reducing flood risk by a sustainable approach to surface water management. Stakeholder engagement and participation was fundamental to achieve a sustainable approach.

Why should you attend?

This seminar and site visit will be an ideal opportunity to visit sustainable drainage as constructed on site as well as presentations from those responsible for implementation and ongoing maintenance.
