UK Government departments and agencies

Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)
UK Government department whose remit is the pursuit of sustainable development considering economic, social and environmental issues. Defra brings all aspects of the environment, rural matters, farming and food production together, and is a focal point for all rural policy, relating to people, the economy and the environment.

Department of the Environment Northern Ireland (DOENI)
The Department's aim is to improve the quality of life in Northern Ireland, now and for the future, by promoting a better and safer environment and supporting effective and efficient local government.

Department of Trade & Industry (DTI)

Environment Agency (EA)

Environment and Heritage Service Northern Ireland (EHSNI)
Protect and conserve Northern Ireland’s natural heritage and built environment, to control and regulate pollution and to promote wider appreciation of the environment and best environmental practices.

Health & Safety Executive (HSE)
Look after health and safety in nuclear installations and mines, factories, farms, hospitals and schools, offshore gas and oil installations, the safety of the gas grid and the movement of dangerous goods and substances, railway safety, and many other aspects of the protection both of workers and the public.

Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)
Purpose to oversee and manage the decommissioning and clean-up of the UK’s civil nuclear legacy.

A trade association & information body for the British civil nuclear industry.

The Clearance and Exemption Working Group (CEWG)
The CEWG is a nuclear industry working group which aims to provide and foster a safe, responsible and sustainable approach to clearance and exemption issues, and to contribute to the development of national and international legislation, standards and guidance as appropriate.

Committee Examining Radiation Risks from Internal Emitters (CERRIE)
Considering present risk models for radiation and health applying to exposure to radiation from internal radionuclides.

CIRIA
Company owned by other companies, universities, government departments and other public sector agencies, organisations and regulators. CIRIA’s owners include representatives from all parts of the supply chains of the modern built environment, covering building and civil engineering as well as transport and utilities infrastructure. CIRIA’s work is recognised as being independent, objective and authoritative.

Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM)
It is a new independent body that has been set up by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Margaret Beckett, along with Environment Ministers for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. CoRWM has been set up to review options for managing solid radioactive waste in the UK and to recommend the option, or combination of options, that can provide a long-term solution, providing protection for people and the environment.

Energy Institute
A forum for debate and opinion on energy and environmental matters and the focal point for the dissemination of scientific and engineering knowledge relating to these matters.

European approach to nuclear and radiological emergency management and rehabilitation strategies (EURANOS)
This is a 5-year European Commission funded research project that started in April 2004 with the overall goal to increase the coherence and effectiveness of nuclear and radiological off-site emergency management in Europe including the rehabilitation of contaminated areas.

European Nuclear Society
Aims to promote and to contribute to the advancement of science and engineering in the field of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy by all suitable means.

Health Protection Agency
On 1 April 2005, the Agency was established as a non-departmental public body, replacing the HPA SpHA and the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) and with radiation protection as part of health protection incorporated in its remit.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
The IAEA is the world's centre of co-operation in the nuclear field. It was set up as the world's "Atoms for Peace" organisation in 1957 within the United Nations family. The Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies.

Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM)
The INMM is a forum for interacting with the specialists in nuclear materials management in industry, government, academia, and international organisations throughout the world. INMM membership provides many opportunities to learn the best approaches and procedures for implementing all aspects of nuclear materials management.

Nuclear Free Local Authorities (NFLA)
NFLA began in Manchester in November 1980 to work to eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons and carries out a range of research, policy and legal work. This work is designed to assist local government in meeting its commitment to sustainable development, environmental protection and public safety.

Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee (RWMAC)
Offers independent advice to Ministers on radioactive waste management issues. Members of the Committee have been drawn from a wide range of backgrounds and specialisms including radioactive waste management, radiological protection, earth sciences, environmental law & planning, medical physics and social sciences.

Society for Radiological Protection
A major Scientific Society for all who are professionally concerned with the safety aspects of ionising and non-ionising radiation in education, central and local government, industry, medicine and research.

Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP)
Established in 2001 in response to the UK Government's Waste Strategy 2000 to promote sustainable waste management.

United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)
To protect human health & safeguard the natural environment.

United States Department of Energy (DOE)
A leading science and technology agency whose research supports United States energy security, national security, environmental quality and contributes to a better quality of life.
