Tunnels: inspection, assessment and maintenance (RP712)

There are numerous tunnels in the UK, particularly in the railway and sewerage networks. Many are far beyond their original life expectancy, and in very few cases would it be economical to replace them with new build. The commercial and environmental pressure to improve the performance of existing infrastructure implies a need to develop a comprehensive and standard rationale for tunnel assessment and repair, similar to that already published for infrastructure embankments (CIRIA Report C592), cuttings (CIRIA Report C591) and Masonry Arch Bridges (CIRIA Report C656).

The failure to deal with ageing and deteriorating tunnels could severely restrict government transport policy and the provision of vital infrastructure including water and waste water transportation. CIRIA aims to provide best practice guidance for infrastructure owners, their designers, contractors and maintenance managers to reduce repair and maintenance costs through the development of a rational, formal, comprehensive process for tunnel equipment assessment and repair.

Consultation workshop and case studies

A consultation workshop was held on 30 November 2004 for those who have experience of tunnel inspection, assessment and maintenance who gave their view on the content and scope of the guidance. The research team would also welcome case studies to illustrate good and poor practice in the inspection, investigation, assessment, maintenance, repair and strengthening of tunnels, and any photos which may demonstrate this.

If you are able to supply case studies or would like further information, please contact Chris Chiverrell.
