FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CIRIA wins Sustainable Building and Construction Global Conference 2011 Bid

CIRIA have won the bid to bring the Global Sustainable Building and Construction Conference 2011 to London. This will be the first time in over a decade of activity that the global conference will be held in London.

Welcoming the success of the bid, London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson said: “I am pleased to provide support for the conference. Meeting the challenge of climate change, through the efficient use of resources is a priority for the Greater London Authority.

“This conference will provide an excellent forum for leaders in sustainability to share and develop their knowledge of best practice from around the world.”

The last four global events have been held in Netherlands, Norway, Japan and Australia (2008).

The global conference is held on a three year cycle and is now considered to be the pre-eminent international conference series on sustainable building and construction.

The event will focus on peer-reviewed papers, presentations and poster displays, and the programme will cover a wide range of relevant sustainable construction issues including sustainable strategies for construction, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, performance based building and knowledge management.

The success of previous conferences is evident by an attendance of 600 in Vancouver, 850 in Maastricht, 1,100 in Oslo and 1,700 in Tokyo. More than 2000 delegates attended the Melbourne conference and greater numbers are expected for London in 2011.

This is a worldwide event and will therefore attract the very best of government, academia and industry to the UK. The bid lead, CIRIA’s Professor Mark Sharp, said: “This is an absolutely fantastic opportunity for the UK to invite the rest of the world to share in our knowledge of sustainable construction and its impetus on the built environment.

“It is clear that the UK continues to be a global leader and has a lot to offer in providing innovation and excellence in this area. We look forward to welcoming the world to London in 2011”.
